MALE SEXUAL DYSFUNCTION

  • Erectile dysfunction.  This is an increasingly prevalent medical condition and involves problems with gaining an erection sufficient for initiation and completion of penetrative sexual intercourse.

There are multiple factors that may cause a man to develop this condition which include both medical conditions (such as heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, previous smoking, previous pelvic or urological surgery and neurological disease) and non-medical diseases (especially anxiety and depression).

  • Premature ejaculation.  This is defined as ejaculation that occurs unwillingly earlier than desired in the act of sexual activity.  It is a multi-factorial condition, often with a significant psychological component.

Treatment:

Treatment options offered by the Urologists at Macarthur Urology include:

  • Medical therapy.  This is an option both for erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation.  For erectile dysfunction it involves one of the members of the PDE5-I family (Viagra, Cialis or Levitra) in those men who have a healthy heart.  In men with premature ejaculation, behavioural techniques and medical therapy (such as anti-depressants) are offered.

  • Injection therapy.   Our nurse at Macarthur Urology will give patients their first intra-cavernosal (that is into the penis) injection as well as educating men and their partners about how to administer these medications themselves and how to deal with any complications should they arise.

  • Surgery.  This is the most invasive option for men with erectile dysfunction.  It involves surgery to the penis to insert an inflatable penile prosthesis.  This is offered by the Urologists at Macarthur Urology, but only as a final option, and after extensive discussions as to potential complications and exhaustion of other less invasive alternatives.
